Rift of the Dark - Prologue
May 2010 Contest Winner - Shiny Ho-oh

The mist glistened in the pale, crescent moon's light. It moved steadily throughout the dark green field, covering the dirt road next to it. The mist emitted a low, eerie sound as it grew.
A tall man in a blood red cloak walked out of the mist, he was followed by a beastly ash grey dog.The man's long snow-white hair outmatched the brightness of the moon. The mist swirled around him, like a protective shield.
The grey dog, tall and muscular, padded closer to the man. It looked up at him, with its black eyes, it huffed then swished its stringy tail. When the man didn't respond, the dog gave a small whimper. The man looked down, "I know, Yu, but we can't go back." The dog gave a loner whimper, then looked back into the mist. It hung its head, but continued to follow the man. It paused to sniff the air, then turned around and growled towards the mist.
Soon after, an ear splitting screech filled the air. The mist was pushed aside as the sound of wingbeats and hungrily rasping breath grew louder. The man stood his ground as the creature burst from the mist giving another terrible screech. The dark brown creature growled, baring its gnarled teeth. Its bat-like wings flapped in cadence, sending the mist all around. Its beady, killer eyes stared at the man, it landed and folded its wings looking almost like a human.
It breathed heavily, saying in a scratchy voice, "Found you."
The man slowly reached for something in his cloak.
"Time to die!" It shrieked, racing toward them.
The man pulled out a black cain, but the brown creature showed no intention, it came at him faster and faster, arms stretched out to kill. He held out the cain sideways, as the creature tried to bite down, then easily pushed it back. As it struggled up, Yu jumped on it. With one last screech, the creature was beheaded bye the dog's powerful bite.
Blood dripped from the dog's mouth into a pool of blood. The man walked over and looked at the creature; it turned completely black, then disintegrated into ashes.
He patted the dog, "Good job, Yu." Then walked away, Yu followed happily.
While he walked away, he looked back one last time ans scoffed. "If they thought such a lousy weakling could kill me, they've definitely underestimated me."
He looked forward and continued to walk dusky dirt road, continuing his journey ahead.
